Open LEDES files in Excel

Viewing LEDES files in Excel

The information contained in your LEDES file may be hard to diagnose at a glance. Pulling the information into a spreadsheet can make it easier to see and interpret.

  • To open your LEDES file in Excel, you will first need to save the file as a txt file.
  • Open Excel.
  • Select “Open”, “Browse”. Change the filter from “All Excel Files” to “All Files”.
  • Select the txt file and open.

  • Toggle the file type option from “Fixed Width” to “Delimited”, and select “Next”.

  • For Delimiters, unselect “Tab” and select “Other”. Enter a | pipe symbol into the other field. Select Next.

  • For the final step, select Finish.

  • You can expand the columns, use Excel’s auto sum feature to calculate totals, and compare the stated total values to the sum of the line item totals.

Note: Instructions may vary depending on your version of windows or excel.
