Viewing LEDES files in Excel

The information contained in your LEDES file may be hard to diagnose at a glance. Pulling the information into a spreadsheet can make it easier to see and interpret.

To open your LEDES file in Excel, you will first need to save the file as a txt file.
Open Excel.
Select “Open”, “Browse”. Change the filter from “All Excel Files” to “All Files”.
Select the txt file and open.

Toggle the file type option from “Fixed Width” to “Delimited”, and select “Next”.

For Delimiters, unselect “Tab” and select “Other”. Enter a | pipe symbol into the other field. Select Next.

For the final step, select Finish.

You can expand the columns, use Excel’s auto sum feature to calculate totals, and compare the stated total values to the sum of the line item totals.
