Viewing LEDES files in Excel
The information contained in your LEDES file may be hard to diagnose at a glance. Pulling the information into a spreadsheet can make it easier to see and interpret.
- To open your LEDES file in Excel, you will first need to save the file as a txt file.
- Open Excel.
- Select “Open”, “Browse”. Change the filter from “All Excel Files” to “All Files”.
- Select the txt file and open.
- Toggle the file type option from “Fixed Width” to “Delimited”, and select “Next”.
- For Delimiters, unselect “Tab” and select “Other”. Enter a | pipe symbol into the other field. Select Next.
- For the final step, select Finish.
- You can expand the columns, use Excel’s auto sum feature to calculate totals, and compare the stated total values to the sum of the line item totals.
