How can I view or print the full history of the narratives for a matter?

You must have admin rights to compete the following:

1. Navigate to Setup > Go To > Object Definitions

2. Click on History

3. Click on Search View > Recent History

4. Click on Results Display

Note: You also have the option of creating a new search view and altering the results display. When doing this you want to make sure that “related objects” under the general tab is checked

5. Add system field “text”
6. Click on Save button
7. Log out and log back in

Note: In SP3 one has the option to do the above steps plus click an option “Span” so that your description spans across the screen instead of “Word Wrapping” in a smaller text field.
