Permissions in Document Vault

Document Vault™, powered by M-Files© is the document management system used by eCounsel. With Document Vault, you can store all documents relevant to eCounsel in a secure repository, add data related to the documents, such as the matter to which a document belongs, and keep track of changes with version control.

This article explains how permissions in Document Vault are inherited from matters in eCounsel. Any document attached to a matter inherits its security from that matter, as configured in eCounsel. The permissions are mapped from the matter in eCounsel to Document Vault as follows:

  • Full Access to the matter means the user can add, read, edit, and delete documents that belong to the matter.

  • Read-Only Access to the matter means the user can see documents that belong to the matter but can't add, edit, or delete documents.

  • No Access to the matter means the user can't see the documents attached to the matter.

Check User-Specific Permission Settings

You can see user-specific permission settings in M-Files.

  1. Find the document and open the document metadata.

  2. On the metadata, click the lock to show the users permissions.

  3. Change the value to All Users in the dropdown list to see the type of access that users have to a document. Permissions are ReadEditDelete, and Change Permissions.

Check if your User Can Change Permissions of a Document

You can modify security settings to make the inherited matter security more restrictive for a document. Note that users must have permissions to override the inherited matter security for a document. Ask the Document Vault admin to change your permissions if you need to change a document permission settings.

To check if you have permissions to change the document permissions:

  1. Find the document and open the document metadata.

  2. On the metadata, click the lock to show the users' permissions.

  3. Change the value to All Users in the dropdown list to see the type of access that users have to a document. Verify that Change Permissions is checked for your user.
